For my first Apollo project of the semester, I decided to develop a project revolved around the death penalty and how it affects society. Along with that, I also have looked into the psychology of someone on death row and what events have occurred in their life. The thinking skill for the first project of this semester was contextualization, which means indulging deeper than the surface and understanding that there is always more to the picture. I weaved contextualization into my project in different forms for each specific part, but most of the contextualization aspect of my project comes from my research. I chose this topic because I have always been fascinated by the psychology of a serial killer and what makes someone have those urges to kill and Apollo was the perfect outlet to dive completely into this interest of mine.
ENGLISH
For the English portion of my first Apollo project of the semester, I decided to form three poems from three different perspectives while evaluating how an execution affects numerous people, not just the person getting executed. I wrote three different poems all from different perspectives. One of the perspectives was from the perspective of someone getting executed, another was from the victim's mother and the last was from the perspective of a falsely accused person on death row about to be executed. Each poem is structured differently as the insight of the individual perspectives are very different from each other. I included contextualization in the English portion of my project throughout my research and presentation of my poems. I was fascinated while researching poems and real event articles for the research component of my project as I learned a lot of insight into how people cope with grief and tragedy. Each poem speaks in a different tone to express how each perspective is much different from the other.

ART
For my art portion of the first project of this semester, I decided to create an assembly of graphite sketches that included factual information to represent not only the death penalty as a whole but also the history behind the different execution styles and crimes that deserve execution. Through creating the art aspect of my project I have also indulged in what specific crimes decipher what execution that person receives. I was interested in this process because I felt I was indulged in the mindset of someone on death row. I began to understand the mental state of someone who has committed terrible crimes and what could have predisposed them to commit these kinds of actions. Along with this, I also began to understand what events throughout their life could result in these emotional barriers later in adulthood. I also created a key to link the imagery, statements, and facts together to show the research process and the information I learned. Contextualization comes into a role in this aspect of my art project through my research and the hidden meaning behind my sketches and illustrations, along with the facts written around these images.

HISTORY
For the history component of my first project of the semester, I decided to create and develop a mind map/flow chart that showcases the common characteristics of serial killers. This map expresses what many serial killers have in common, why they have these relations and also what made them be who they are. This map goes into detail to reveal that there are many layers to someone committing horrendous crimes and that it is normally rare for someone to just "snap" without there being something that happened to push them to that breaking point. In addition to my mind map, I also developed and created a key for a better understanding of the information I presented within my mind map. I chose to create a mind map for my project because I have always wanted to get a better understanding of the mentality behind serial killers. I was also curious to know what events made these individuals act out. Contextualization comes into play within my history component in the form of my research and the key.
